How Much Does Moving Cost in 2026? Real Numbers (Not Estimates)

Moving cost guides tend to be vague. This one isn't. Real 2026 prices for local moves, long-distance moves, packing, storage, and the surprise charges nobody mentions.

How Much Does Moving Cost in 2026? Real Numbers (Not Estimates)

If you've searched "how much does moving cost," you've probably gotten ranges like "between $500 and $10,000." That's not helpful. This guide breaks down what moving actually costs in 2026, based on real data from bookings on Handiro and US national averages.

The two big variables

Moving cost depends on two things more than anything else: distance and volume.

  • Local move (under 100 miles): Priced hourly. Crew + truck.
  • Long-distance move (over 100 miles or across state lines): Priced by weight (or cubic feet) + distance.

Everything else (packing, stairs, specialty items, storage, expedited service) is a multiplier or add-on.

Local moves: real 2026 prices

A local move is anything within a metro area or within about 100 miles. Most local movers charge an hourly rate that covers the crew and the truck.

Hourly rates by crew size (US average, 2026)

  • 2 movers + truck: $145-$235/hr
  • 3 movers + truck: $185-$305/hr
  • 4 movers + truck: $225-$385/hr

Most companies have a 2-3 hour minimum.

How long it actually takes

These are honest estimates assuming reasonable access, light packing already done, and no stairs.

  • Studio: 2-3 hours, 2 movers
  • 1BR apartment: 3-4 hours, 2 movers
  • 2BR apartment: 4-6 hours, 2-3 movers
  • 2BR house: 5-7 hours, 3 movers
  • 3BR house: 6-9 hours, 3-4 movers
  • 4BR house: 8-12 hours, 4 movers
  • 5BR+ house: 10-14 hours, 4-5 movers

Total local move ranges (2026)

  • Studio: $390-$705
  • 1BR: $585-$1,020
  • 2BR apartment: $870-$1,635
  • 2BR house: $1,335-$2,170
  • 3BR house: $1,700-$3,135
  • 4BR house: $2,775-$4,725

Long-distance moves: real 2026 prices

Long-distance pricing uses weight + distance + minimum cube. The averages below assume standard service and binding (not-to-exceed) estimates.

Charlotte to Atlanta (~250 miles)

  • 1BR: $1,400-$2,800
  • 2BR: $2,400-$4,800
  • 3BR: $4,200-$7,500
  • 4BR: $6,500-$11,500

Charlotte to New York (~620 miles)

  • 1BR: $2,400-$4,500
  • 2BR: $3,800-$6,800
  • 3BR: $6,500-$10,800
  • 4BR: $9,800-$15,800

Charlotte to Los Angeles (~2,400 miles)

  • 1BR: $4,200-$7,200
  • 2BR: $6,500-$10,500
  • 3BR: $9,800-$16,500
  • 4BR: $13,500-$22,000

Cross-country moves above $15,000 are usually full-service moves: packing + loading + transport + unloading + unpacking.

What pushes prices up

Some add-ons happen on most moves. Know them before you book.

  • Packing service (full): 25-40% of the base price
  • Packing supplies only: $185-$485 typical
  • Specialty items (piano, gun safe, pool table, hot tub): $385-$1,800 each
  • Stairs: $50-$100 per flight beyond first
  • Long carry (truck more than 75 feet from door): $50-$185
  • Elevator (slow or restricted): $95-$245
  • Storage in transit: $185-$485/month
  • Temporary parking permit (city-required for some downtown locations): $25-$85
  • Insurance upgrade to full-value protection: 1-3% of declared value

What pulls prices down

  • Mid-week, mid-month moves: 10-20% cheaper than weekend/end-of-month
  • Off-peak season (Oct-Apr): 15-25% cheaper than May-Sep
  • Self-packing: $300-$800 savings on a typical 2BR
  • Loading help only (you drive a rental truck): $400-$800 vs. full local move
  • Hybrid (PODS-style + your own help loading): often the cheapest for moves under 500 miles

DIY vs. hire: when to do which

DIY moves (rental truck)

Good if you have help and few stairs. U-Haul or Penske rental for local moves:

  • 15-ft truck: $39.95/day base + $0.99/mile + gas
  • 20-ft truck: $44.95/day base + $0.99/mile + gas
  • 26-ft truck: $54.95/day base + $1.29/mile + gas

Typical local DIY move total: $185-$475 including gas and dollies. Plus your time and back.

Hybrid (PODS or U-Pack)

You pack the container, they drive it. Reasonable for moves over 200 miles.

  • Single container, local: $385-$895/month
  • Single container, Charlotte to NYC: $3,200-$5,800
  • Two containers, Charlotte to LA: $7,500-$11,500

Full-service (professional movers)

What everything else in this guide describes. More expensive but easier.

What movers should not charge you

Some "fees" are red flags. If you see these in a quote, push back or walk away:

  • "Fuel surcharge" layered on top of mileage. Pick one.
  • "Cleaning fee" for moving your own stuff.
  • "Truck rental fee" on top of hourly rate (the truck is part of the hourly rate).
  • "Inventory fee" charged separately.
  • Surprise weight overage on a binding estimate.

Tipping

US standard:

  • Local move: $20-$40 per mover for a half day, $40-$60 for a full day
  • Long-distance move: $80-$150 per mover at unload (more if you're happy)

Cash is preferred. Tipping is appreciated but not required.
